New Music: Ray Jr. – “Don’t Give Up” (ft. Sway)
Cleveland has always provided original music that incorporated the harsh realities of growing up in the midwest. As we enter into a new era of Ohio music, Cleveland has embraced Ray Jr. as the mayor of their city — specifically East Cleveland, which has a reputation for being the roughest part of the area.
Just over two weeks ago, Ray Jr. lit up the internet with a monster remix of “Same Crew” featuring Dej Loaf, Young Dolph, Troy Ave, and Machine Gun Kelly. Switching gears today, Ray unloads his new Clockwork-produced single “Don’t Give Up.” The new music, as most of Ray’s music tends to do, touches on very real situations happening in his city including everything from running the streets for money just to get by, to disloyalty, to police brutality, and much more.

In lieu of the one year anniversary of Coalmine Records’ decennary compilation album, Unearthed, mixed by DJ Revolution, the Brooklyn-based indie is pleased to present the J57 Remix of the El Da Sensei featured favorite, “Show Stoppa,” which boasts Sweden’s DJ Devastate and Young Pacino on the hook duties, over J’s head nodding remix. To further celebrate the milestone, Coalmine’s pleased to release a limited edition run of Unearthed on cassette. Dubbed the ‘Green Slimes’ for being pressed on green shells, the hour long mix serves as a who’s who of today’s independent Hip-Hop scene, packed with features from both veteran and burgeoning emcees such as Pharoahe Monch, Kool G Rap, Large Professor, The Artifacts, Blu, Sean Price, Billy Danze (of M.O.P.), Big Noyd, One Dae, Skillz, Guilty Simpson, Rah DIgga, Maffew Ragazino, El Da Sensei, and Fashawn, among others. Producers tapped include Diamond D, Nottz, Ayatollah, Marco Polo, Khrysis, along with the Grammy Award Winning, M-Phazes, among others.

Hip-Hop, as it exists today, is constantly pushing its creative boundaries, while still retaining its historical ties as a culture that started out in the park. The influence of yesteryear has allowed for new heads to trace a lineage of sounds, sights, and historic moments, allowing the current generation to pay “Homage” to its past. Representing this new wave of emcees is, Token, the Salem, Mass high school student who aims to keep that classic sound as the fundamental component of his rap pedigree. Produced by Chi-Town’s Rediculus, “Homage” blends a KRS-One quotable over a smoothed out instrumental, serving as the backdrop for Token’s lyrical onslaught. Beyond paying respects to The Teacha, both the track and the black and white visuals help to maintain focus on the topic at hand, while showcasing Token’s ability to stand on his own. “Homage” can be found on Rediculus’ producer compilation, In Response: Dee-Fi, which is now available for free download through Platformz Music, and is supported through their app, which aims to put the world of indie music and media in your control.

High Focus and Blah records are arguably two of the most high profile labels about in the UK ‘scene’ at the moment, and April has seen HF continue its strong start to 2015 by releasing a collaborative project from their own Dirty Dike and Blah Records heavy hitter Lee Scott, entitled ‘Butter Fly’.
The twist to the project is that the normally outspoken Dike is involved solely as the producer, allowing Scott to bring his unique style and scouse slang to a selection of beats that matches them very well indeed.
Although the beats may be a bit to down tempo for some, I found that after a few listens you realise that the beats and lyrics really gel to create something that is , at the same time, smooth, jazzy, trippy, boastful, weird (for want of a better word!)and at times wise and even uplifting (‘Walk the Walk’ encourages us to move with purpose in life , and that ‘all routes are scenic’ if you follow this advice).
This release also continues the run of HF releases by artists outside of the labels core stable (the last one being the Onoe Caponoe and Chemo project ‘Voices From Planet Cattelle’ ) which has produced some exciting and interesting music that is a little different from the Boom Bap vibes of Leaf Dog, The Four Owls etc, and added an extra splash of diversity to the label’s output.
There isn’t really a skippable track on this project, as Scott’s excellent wordplay keeps the listener’s attention on every track, and you find yourself zoning out to the smooth beats.
Personal favourites include the neck snapping ‘Sell Drugs’, where Scott tells the listener ‘All I want to do is Sag and sell weed’ and dismisses the drudgery of a 9 to 5, the dark and slightly menacing ‘Eight O Clock In The Morning’ and the penultimate track ‘Don’t Tell me’, with its flurry of double time on the bridge coming as a nice surprise.

Living in New York you have to make a daily choice on whether or not you feel like donating your spare change to a homeless person. It can be a difficult process for both parties, I take a look at both sides of the coin.’
