All posts for the month May, 2015
Two hard-working London MC’s take a moment (on what is probably their lunch-break) to express their love for the most influential music in the world – Hip-Hop. Following on from last month’s successful album launch @ Concrete (Shoreditch) & the release of their first video “Good Morning” – ENDLESS LOVE is a welcome serving of soulful, easy listening for 90’s purists & new-comers alike. Over melodic production by Sonar Music, Troy takes us back to his roots with lyrics like:
“Pops had speakers that were tall as me.
So much vinyl that the shelves we’re bending awkwardly
All of that supported me, till on the corners we’d
Rap till we got called for tea. It’s so extraordinary..”
Archetype elevates the hook & narrates with his description of how hip-hop has influenced his life:
“Without it, I wouldn’t be where I am today..”

New Music: Ray Jr. – “Don’t Give Up” (ft. Sway)
Cleveland has always provided original music that incorporated the harsh realities of growing up in the midwest. As we enter into a new era of Ohio music, Cleveland has embraced Ray Jr. as the mayor of their city — specifically East Cleveland, which has a reputation for being the roughest part of the area.
Just over two weeks ago, Ray Jr. lit up the internet with a monster remix of “Same Crew” featuring Dej Loaf, Young Dolph, Troy Ave, and Machine Gun Kelly. Switching gears today, Ray unloads his new Clockwork-produced single “Don’t Give Up.” The new music, as most of Ray’s music tends to do, touches on very real situations happening in his city including everything from running the streets for money just to get by, to disloyalty, to police brutality, and much more.

In lieu of the one year anniversary of Coalmine Records’ decennary compilation album, Unearthed, mixed by DJ Revolution, the Brooklyn-based indie is pleased to present the J57 Remix of the El Da Sensei featured favorite, “Show Stoppa,” which boasts Sweden’s DJ Devastate and Young Pacino on the hook duties, over J’s head nodding remix. To further celebrate the milestone, Coalmine’s pleased to release a limited edition run of Unearthed on cassette. Dubbed the ‘Green Slimes’ for being pressed on green shells, the hour long mix serves as a who’s who of today’s independent Hip-Hop scene, packed with features from both veteran and burgeoning emcees such as Pharoahe Monch, Kool G Rap, Large Professor, The Artifacts, Blu, Sean Price, Billy Danze (of M.O.P.), Big Noyd, One Dae, Skillz, Guilty Simpson, Rah DIgga, Maffew Ragazino, El Da Sensei, and Fashawn, among others. Producers tapped include Diamond D, Nottz, Ayatollah, Marco Polo, Khrysis, along with the Grammy Award Winning, M-Phazes, among others.
Beats & Bars comes to Stoke for its first event at our new home The Basement. For our first event we’ve got a superb line-up of live acts, deejays and beat-boxers for you, as all as an open mic cipher for local artists to get involved. Expect electric performances as well as some of your favourite tracks getting played! Beats & Bars Stoke has arrived… get ready to represent and get you that real Hip-Hop essence… like Afrika Bambaataa said Hip-Hop is ‘Peace, Unity, Love and Having Fun…’
For our first event we have London rapper Novar (formerly known as Supar Novar), who was labelled a ‘UK legend’ by SB.TV and has been an integral member of the UK Hip-Hop scene for over twelve years. As a member of the legendary UK rap group ‘The Mud Family’ with acts like Skinnyman he went to release an album on Kemet Records, the same label that released Klashnekoff’s ‘Murder’. Novar has performed at Glastonbury, as well as sharing stages with Ghostface (Wu-Tang), Bone Thugs N Harmony, M.O.P, The Clipse, DJ Premier and many more, collaborating with super stars such as Dappy from N Dubz and Ashanti, and featuring on classic underground records with Foreign Beggars, Ed Skrien, Wordsmiff, Genesis Elijah, Skinnyman, Doc Brown and many more.
Also on the night we have performances from three Midlands acts that have all recently been signed to Chicago record label Platformz which is run by producer Rediculus. Trademark Blud, Big Ribzy & Alex-is will all give up solo performances which will include forthcoming material from the label as well as some of their more well known anthems. All three rappers this perform at Boom Bap Festival as well as having dates booked this year for Manchester, Canterbury, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Cambridge, Chester, Swindon & Telford, with more dates coming. This will be backed with a string of local talent too, offering a chance for local heads to see their acts show & prove! We’ve got a brilliant selection including co-host and co-promoter of Beats & Bars Stoke Mr5hano, Midlandz Connect’d, Danny M, LFE & Cheppy.
DJ support comes from the legendary Tricksta, a Wolverhampton DJ/Producer who founded Beats & Bars back in 2012. He runs leading PR Company Park Street PR which represents UK & US acts, as well as being behind UK Runnings Mixtapes, the UK’s longest running mixtape series that was founded in 2001. He’s been DJ’ing 26 years this year and has played all over America in Miami, Los Angeles, Houston, San Francisco & Houston, as well as Sweden, Holland, France, Switzerland, Turkey and more.
