This week Stakka brings you a selection of the finest tunes by artists from Rhymepads Hometown of Cambridge. Cambridge has a lot of emerging MCs and some established names hailing from their fine city and Rhymepad though it an ideal time to show everyone what’s going on in their local scene right now. Most Bridge spitters are represented here, but there’s always new artists popping up and they cant play songs unless they have them so if you are from Cambridge and feel left out from not being included please don’t vex just get in touch with them at info@rhymepad-radio.co.uk and make them aware. They will be happy to hear your material. So with that said, kick back and enjoy rhymepads usual mix of dope hip hop but this time with a local twist.

Instrumentally this song’s pretty chilled, but the lyrical focus isn’t at all. ‘Spondoole’ charts the ridiculous notion that we have to sell our time to companies in order to survive. Fuckery.

‘The Message’ is a very dark and extremely macabre song, that is unapologetically Orwellian in content (you can check the soundclip if you need convincing). It’s an intense and relentless track that critiques and analyses the socio and political situation that the world is currently sinking in. This isn’t a preachy track, and anyone that tries to glaze over it by saying it’s too righteous or conscience is an idiot. Although if you want that kind of review, you probably shouldn’t be on this site.
Daze isn’t telling you what to do, or how to achieve world peace tomorrow, he’s simply pointing out some more obvious flaws within humanity that we like to ignore.
Crise Da God is still only young, but I’m a fan of his slightly off key style. Hopefully he’ll stay on this kind of style, and not go the way of so many young MCs and add tripple snares, bitches and bling, because he definitely has more talent and potential than that. For now it’d be interesting to see where Crise Da God goes, and how his style develops; we’ll stay posted on this kid for sure.
Keith Price, Leeds’ answer to Grandmaster Flash (Grandmaster Flash may or may not have said that, I just can’t say for sure) has been releasing a series of beat tapes entitled Bunch Of Fives over the last couple weeks. We over here at HHLAT have been following him, and generally jumping on his bandwagon. Keith has been cutting up, sampling and scratching some classic tracks, and mixing in his own ideas and instrumentation all with the help of a SP 505, overdubs, no sequencing, turntable and of course the vinyl.
Well the Bunch Of Fives series thus far have been so successful that Keith’s gone over his free download limit for Bandcamp (I didn’t even know they had a limit those tinkers), so because he isn’t as rich as DJ Premier just yet, volumes 1-3 will only be free until the release of the 4th Bunch of Fives on the 1st of February. This is so that the 4th release can be free, and you can all get yourselves a copy. For all those late to the party you’re going to have to pay a small amount to get the previous copies, but like we always say DAPPY AND STARBUCKS DON’T NEED YOUR MONEY, SUPPORT YOUR SCENE.
Enjoy for free, until the 1st!
Earlier today we posted Jus Daze’s new track ‘Superman’s Dead’, a song all detailing the last days of Superman. It was a clever and engaging track, and I was wondering if we’d get sent any other songs that focused as heavily on storytelling and narrative as Jus Daze, and was just as self-aware and articulate . Well, a few hours later this appeared in our inbox. I wasn’t aware of Slum Village and their previous material, but this was an instant favourite. I had to give it a good few listens to fully follow the story and linear of the song, but I realised it’s not a strictly A to B type track, and every time I listened to the song, more things jumped out at me. Whether it was a nice instrumental cut, or vocal line-I was impressed.
‘No Mas’ was extremely reminiscent of YZ and Rae and Christian’s song ‘Now I Lay Me Down’, and early Jeru Tha Damaja, and was a really good introduction to Slum Village as a group and made me want to hunt them down, and find out more material by them. Their album ‘Dirty Slums 2’ (which will be hosted by Mick Boogie) drops tomorrow and I’m excited to see what else these guys can come out with.
