You Must Learn ep1: @Jeruthedamaja – “The Sun Rises In The East” #AUDIO @EvBoogie @PeterOasis @DharmicX

youmustlearn

The word anniversary once referred to the commemorative feast in honor of a Catholic saint. Today we use the term for a celebration of any past event that took place the year or years prior on the same date.

This year in particular marks the 20th Anniversary of a hip-hop record distinguished by its raw sound, uncompromising lyricism, and social commentary: Jeru the Damaja’s debut album, The Sun Rises In The East. 1994 was a powerful, transformative year for hip-hop. Nas, OutKast, and Biggie Smalls each dropped their debut albums, while other more established artists released projects regarded both then and now as milestones in the genre. Jeru was only 21 years old when he recorded the The Sun Rises; 22 when it came out on Payday Records. And the album was well received in the hip-hop community.

What you’re about to hear is Jeru the Damaja taking us track by track through his DJ Premier-produced debut album, delving into an array of subjects and stories such as:

– Waiting and watching for Nas to create Illmatic.
– Spending formative years with the members of the Wu-Tang Clan.
– The nature of Brooklyn pride.
– His inspiration drawn from his family, friends, and predecessors.
– And the story of how he got his pet hamster.

This is “You Must Learn.”

“You Must Learn” was produced and edited by Peter Oasis, written by Dharmic X, and executive produced by Evan Auerbach (of UpNorthTrips), with narration from Soul Khan. The intro was produced by DJ Flipout, and the artwork was designed by Kelly Green.

Shawn Lee – ‘Marimba’ #INSTRUMENTAL #AUDIO @iloveshawnlee

Shawn Lee – ‘Marimba’, taken from the album ‘Golden Age Against The Machine’. A living audio love letter to the golden age of hip-hop. This spans the early 80’s to the mid 90’s.

Shawn takes up the story “Like many other musicians, sample based production effected me deeply. It permeated the how and what i played. The sonic qualities of my productions, the arrangements and my drumming… hip-hop at its best was raw and unconventional…. there is something magical about grabbing a loop from an old funk record and layering it with some strings from an easy listening record and pitching down a horn stab from a jazz record and a guitar lick from pysch rock record …. and then pinning it down with a fat beat”

Mark Steele – “Letter To Carolina” #AUDIO #DL @whoismarksteele

lettertocarolina

Mark Steele is a solo rap artist from Durham, NC. Currently residing in New York City, his sound imbues a gritty, fervid sound that has been long lost since the late 90’s, early 2000’s. Bred into the culture since the tender age of 15, he has already worked with some of the industry’s best. Topping the list includes his mentor and former college professor, super producer 9th Wonder, and YMCMB artist Cory Gunz. Formerly of the NC based rap duo Mic&Rep, well respected publications such as The Source Magazine’s “Unsigned Hype” have highlighted Steele’s potential, as well as a slew of the top online blog sites.

With his latest track, “Letter To Carolina,” premiered by kevinnottingham.com,  Mark writes a letter back home to let his home state know he is out here fighting the good fight for them, while also warning his competition he is joining the fight.

Mark Steele’s latest mixtape, ‘Empty Auditorium’, is out now: http://www.audiomack.com/album/mark-steele/empty-auditorium
