XOTR is three man strong group from Luton, UK with all three members taking on the rapping, singing and instrumental duties. The released is hosted by our man, and veteran producer/DJ Tricksta, and is a pretty varied and electric mix. If that sounds a bit vague I’ll explain. A while back, or maybe yesterday, or this possibly this morning we’ve talked about how a lot of ‘rappers’ (ooh) find it extremely hard to mix party rap with content. I’m not sure why, there are plenty of real artists doing it (just look over our website kid), and OXTR manage this perfectly. They mix different aspects, production techniques and instrumentals with intelligent themes, with simply put, good party rap.
You can still analyse and critique serious and darker subjects, without glamourising it; and when an MC says they’re going to kill you on the track that doesn’t always mean they’re literally going to hop out of your speakers and merk you. XOTR are a group that can balance all these parts without sounding cheesy or overdone. There are a few tracks with auto-tune mixed in, which is a bit of a shame because the dude clearly has a better voice than that and I’d rather hear his natural singing voice. Overall though the LP is full of a lot of potential and I’d be excited to see what else these guys can come out with in the future.

Yesterday I was complaining to the world of Twitter, that in the last week or two we haven’t had a massive influx of content from our UK and European brethren. I mean, don’t get me wrong I love everything from everywhere regardless of country or language (EVERYTHING IS GOOD), but I do like to hear some homegrown talent. Well, well we were sent a single by American rapper ESH, taken from the album ‘Borderless’ produced and mixed by Spanish DJ, DJ Keal and Hibe. We reviewed the single, and today we’ve been sent the finished article in all its digital glory. A good reminder that when we say UK and/or European artists we’re not just talking about the MCs.
The album itself is a good mix of American and European MCs. As I said in the review of ESH’s track ‘Merica’ yesterday, the instrumentation and production showcases a good balance of traditional and old skool beats, coupled with new and progressive cuts. The soul samples and cuts are definitely appreciated on this, I’ll always be happy to hear DJ’s and producers use them in their records. Never mad.
If you’re a diehard backpacker/boom bap kid, then you’re going to love. Likewise if you’re a fan of roadman rap, and intelligent content then chances are you’ll be a fan too. This isn’t for pop-rap fans though, I can promise you. No bitches, no bling, no top 40 count down, just raw, gritty hip-hop.
Features: Miilk Bone, Tito Fuerte (Original Text), Sic Shane, Phace, Venomous2000, Athena, StreesWon and Esh Temonolith.
Stand out tracks: Walla Bing Bang, Merica, Vague Vision.

Collective Underground are a Hip-Hop duo from Luton Town, UK compromising of two MC’s/Producers; Stephen Fivensix and Danny Soundwave. Even though the word ‘collective’ isn’t usually associated with companies of two, it is meant to symbolise the many roles these two talented artists occupy as producers, rappers, singers and songwriters.
The duo started making music and formed Collective Underground at the beginning of 2011. They released their début mixtape ‘Urban Poetry Vol I’ at the end of 2011 as part of the long standing UK Runnings mixtape series. This release was met with praise from bloggers and taste makers in the UK Hip Hop scene.
The end of 2012 sees them dropping their second mixtape ‘Tales from Sector G’ which is a conceptual project inspired by the 1990 motion picture ‘Total Recall’. The 11 track mixtape will take you through the mean streets of ‘Sector G’, a fictional ghetto neighbourhood on Mars set in the year 2084. The duo rap from a number of character perspectives, including the main protagonist of the film; ‘Douglas Quade’ as well as mutant psychic and leader of the rebels ‘Kuato’.
Both Fivensix and Soundwave have enjoyed underground success with their past releases and the end of 2012 sees them release their most formidable work to date.
