Ok first things first. This review is a bit late. My sincerest apologies to Lords of Nothing this is not a reflection on their work merely a reflection of my busy life. That being said the delay has caused something serendipitous to happen. As I’m sat here jamming to this EP for the umpteenth time, the sun has made itself known and shone light ( wahey) on this impressive effort to show it as the summer jam that it is. So it all works out in the end haha. (Really though I am sorry)
Lords Of Nothing are are an accomplished duo from Portsmouth, UK consisting of long time collaborators and friends Spitfire and Towa, emcee and producer respectively. Having a solid release like the earlier ‘Triple Filtered’ already under their belts I knew that the ‘Lucky Charms EP’ was gonna be another good one, but even I was pleasantly surprised at just how good it is.
Spitfire has really come into his own on this. Having been putting in a more consistent hard graft than most over the last year or so ‘The Lucky Charms EP’ finds him giving his most confident and comfortable display of skill. Always sounding like the kid who is having the most fun at the party, the sheer enjoyment that comes through in his style is refreshing when dropped in a world of angry rappers. Not to say he’s happy with every subject he writes about, just that he clearly loves his craft. I always get the sense he’s being more himself than a lot of rappers out there, and a lot of them could learn a lesson from Spitfire about this. Riding beats with individuality and character, with an old skool kinda flow he is one of the most recognisable voices in UK Hip Hop.
There are few producers like Towa. Not someone content with churning out a thousand beats of the same style, he has put forward a diverse collection of tracks with Spitfire during their history together. This has given them more variety of sound as a group than a lot of those out there. As I understand it Towa works exclusively with Spitfire. This is probably the reason they have been able to create such a consistently fluid duo. With his own unique take on Hip Hop production Towa is such an interesting producer. I found myself being constantly unsure of what would happen next musically on ‘Lucky Charm’s, even mid song. It’s so nice to be unsure and surprised nowadays with such a large bracket of producers making similar sounding products. I’m not gonna just sit here and write track one beat was blah blah, track two beat was etc etc because that would sell him short.
Overall this is a brilliant collection of natural and honest hip hop. No gimmicks, no fake fronts, no forced attitude just good tune after good tune. I genuinely enjoyed this from start to finish and I think you’d be robbing yourself not checking it out. Look out for more releases from these boys in the future, they re sure to only get better and better.

Edward Scissortongue is one of the most debated MCs in the UK right now.
There is a section of people who don’t rate him, who call him a pagan (yep those sort of twats) and say he dresses like a hipster. Yeah because that’s the sort of thing that influences whether or not someone’s music is any good; skinny jeans. Dickheads. The supportive side of this spectrum is fierce. They will tell you Scissor spins ideologies, that he perceives things in a very unique way. Personally I would have to say that his ability is clear and evident. It’s more a case of going over people’s heads. I mean if you want something easy to consume then the Theremin E.P is probably not for you. Not that it’s some overly deep pretentious manifesto, just that it requires you to really pay attention and think.
Scissortongue’s debut solo effort Better Luck Next Life announced him as a serious contender for our attention. It shone out as something very different in an over saturated market of bland rappers. I would hazard a guess that he would be the worst person to play scrabble against as the vocabulary he possesses is phenomenal. Carving turn of phrase like very few others. Although I still don’t know what the fuck a rangoose quackathon is haha…
As a follow up effort to B.L.N.L, The Theremin E.P is an even more intricate web of imagery. Taking you further down into the rabbit hole of Scissor’s mind. An eerie instrumental track kicks off the e.p and perfectly sets the mood of the journey about to be undertaken by the listener. I say journey because that’s what Scissor’s music is to me, not just verse chorus verse tracks he creates full songs. The depth of subject matter and introspective musings are refreshing in a world of pound cake remixes about how much cash you may or may not be stacking. To make an attempt at simple descriptions of what he talks about on each track would not only sell them hugely short, but I would probably see them differently to you, as you would see them in another way to someone else. With a mind-bending poetic style Scissor is one of the most exciting artists in the game.
Though often splitting opinions fiercely he has most people speaking his name and this release will surely see that this continues. Especially when bolstered by psycho active production from Dirty Dike, Sumgii, Miles Courtney, Eon Ra and Konchis. I don’t think you’d hear the beats they’ve supplied on this E.P on most rappers releases, but they really provide the musical canvas perfectly for scissors reality and fantasy blending tales.
Riding the mega wave that is High Focus, Scissor has delivered one of the labels standout releases to date here in both quality and creativity, and I imagine he’ll only strengthen with each effort. This is one for those late night headphone blaze ups, when you really have the time to take in just what it is he’s created here. Looking forward to seeing what it is he comes with next.

The latest release from the consistantly quality UK label Revorg Records is ‘Hot Water Music’ from label founders TPS Fam (Strange Neighbour, Jack Diggs and Big Toast).
The album is a vivid and honest depiction of life in modern Britain, with themes such as work (and the mundane grind most find themselves in), money issues and fatherhood.
With raw boom bap style beats, provided throughout by crew members The Strange Neighbour and Jack Diggs (apart from the outro, produced by 184), providing the backdrop, the crew effortlessly weave tales of modern life in Britain for the working man, and woman, who dreams of more.
It is a credit to the crew that the honesty and vividness of the lyrics keep the listener nodding in agreement, as well as to the beats.
Tracks such as ‘Monday Blues’ and ‘Tea Break’ describe the ups and downs that come with working a job you hate, while ‘5 Nuggets’ and ‘Pay Day’, highlight the crews love of intoxication and the need to escape from the mundanity of life.
Throughout the album the crew inject humour in to the sometimes sombre subject matters, and a well selected and balanced list of features ( including label mate Efeks, Dat Kid, Sir Plus, Res, Phoenix Da Icefire and Dark Circle) means that this is another well rounded, lyrically and musically tight release from what is steadily becoming a label, and crew, to keep your eyes and ears on!

It’s fair to say there’s a LOT of rappers about now, to me they fall into three categories – those who want to be rappers and are shit at it! Those who want to be rappers and are good at it and those who ARE rappers. The third category being the most naturally talented artists who clearly are meant for it. Three Headed Beast find themselves in this third space. Collectively and singularly. Yes it’s pretty safe to say I am a fan but I think with the release of this new ‘Self Driven’ EP, they’ve proven why I think such things.
If you’re unfamiliar with this group it consists of Jinxsta JX, Twizzy and M.A.B. three emcees who can craft lyrics and flow like not too many can. Each of them has their own individual style immediately apparent from the first track on ‘Self Driven’. Jinxsta with his calm (well calmest of the three ha) style, dropping bar after bar. Twizzy with his unpredictable style keeping you listening hard. M.A.B with maybe the hypest energetic style you’ll hear spitting venom.
Obviously, their depth is vaster than these brief analytics but I just wanted to stress the difference of these guys to each other. Although they fit together perfectly as a single three headed beast.
If you like your hip hop original and natural ‘Self Driven’ is for you. Telling tales of real lives with families and struggles that we can almost all identify with. Repping Abnoxshuz Entertainment they are really adding to a promising movement with this EP. Brash, cocky and confident from start to finish its sure to gain them new listeners. And deservedly so because With ‘Self Driven’ they’ve upped their game.
It kept me nodding my head and gassing at bars and flows throughout, never letting up or getting boring. Devoid of shallow fake bullshit it’s for real listeners who want someone with something to say. Whether it’s the state of hip hop, the daily grind, troublesome younger days or temptation and excess. With production from Fingerfood, Dilligent Fingers, Strange Neighbour and more cementing ‘Self Driven’ together as a very, very good release!!
I’ll be bumping this EP a lot! I highly suggest you do too, it’s free to stream and download so what more can I say to convince you? All in all heavy collection of songs. The future is bright for these guys and they are releasing an album later this year that’s sure to be one to look forward to judging from ‘Self Driven’.
