Film synopsis:
As Beats, Rhymes & Life begins, the rappers who anchored pioneering group A Tribe Called Quest are already going their separate ways. As youths in the mid-’80s, the Queens-born foursome of Tribe—Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White—found success with their exhuberant exploration and combination of hip hop, pop and jazz. But in recent years, Q-Tip, the band’s visionary and reluctant pop star, has tired of the street-bred capriciousness of his lyrical partner Phife, who is equally frustrated with Q-Tip. How these two friends and musical partners got to this state forms the guts of actor-turned-filmmaker Michael Rapaport’s candid and combustible documentary.

A quick glance at MED’s discography shows many classic releases from years past: Madvillain’s Madvillainy, Madlib’s Shades of Blue, J Dilla’s The Shining, Lootpack’s Soundpieces, Quasimoto’s Unseen. Each appearance showcases his well-rounded knack for lyricism, ranging from vivid street imagery to nostalgia to everything. On November 1st we have MED adding a new title to that list.
With the sophomore album, we’re treated to collabs with label mate Aloe Blacc, Talib Kweli, Hodgy Beats (OFWGKTA), Oh No, Kurupt and Pok. Madlib produced the bulk of this album – 10 tracks – along with beats by Karriem Riggins, Oh No, Georgia Anne Muldrow and The Alchemist.
MED speaks on the meaning of the new albums title, “I called the LP Classic because thats the approach I took: create music that has the potential to be played by every generation. This album deals with current issues, personal and within the community. Good-feeling music will always last and allow hip-hop to grow. Even though I recorded well LP was to do the music that I love to do but at the same time show growth.”
A limited edition 3/LP version of the vinyl containing the album and instrumentals is available for pre-order.

First, there was Run DMC then Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def & Talib Kweli, etc. Now introducing, Gods’Illa; the evolution of true Hip-Hop music. With lyrical prowess, presence and authenticity reminiscent of the glory days, Gods’Illa, a hip-hop group consisting of 3 actual brothers Acem Eternal Mind, God Allah Truth & Powerful Rasheem Mathematics, has stepped on to the scene to provide the masses with a sound that shifts the paradigm and brings the focus of the music back to the experiences of everyday people. The name Gods’Illa (God Is Illa) embodies not only the group’s culture but also the scale of music they create in comparison to the competition.
Formed in 2004, Gods’Illa’s journey began well before the brothers banded to collectively embark on this dream. Acem, the eldest of the three, was first to display his love of music as part of S.C.A.N; a group created by international rap artist Substantial under the Unlimited Vinyl Ink umbrella. Not long after, Truth followed suit and began performing at local talent shows throughout the Washington, DC metro area, developing his musical craft while shadowing his older brothers movements. So, it comes at no surprise that 300 miles away in Brooklyn, NY, Powerful, the youngest of the brotherly trio, began experimenting with writing and effortlessly became the missing piece to the group.
Since their debut on Unlimited Vinyl’s, Make Da Face mixtape in 2005, Gods’Illa has performed throughout the Washington, DC area and Mid-Atlantic Region opening for legendary acts like Brand Nubian in addition to several other performances including but not limited to: Capital Hip Hop Soulfest, Hip-Hop on the Hill (McDaniel College), CMJ Showcase and the world renown End of the Weak Mic Series. In 2009, the group garnered a great deal of notable achievements including placing #1 in MTV’s VMA Best Breakout DC Competition followed by the release of the critically-acclaimed Pre-Lease EP which attracted the attention of legendary DJ/producer DJ Scratch as well as 9th Wonder. Gods’Illa has been featured on sites such as Okayplayer, DJBooth.net and even Peter Rosenberg has begun including their music on Late Night with Peter Rosenberg show on NYC’s Hot 97.
With the ability to tell stories through the use of powerful rhymes that transcend life, Gods’Illa promises to truly be a cut above the rest. The brothers vary in age as they do in style but it’s their unique element of creativity that helps to create a sound collectively described as Universal.
Wu-Tang Clan founding member Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s debut solo effort, Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version is getting the full re-release ‘deluxe’ treatment. The album will be released as a deluxe box set on November 22 through Get on Down with a fully remastered album on one disc and a second disc of remixes, rarities, instrumentals, and acappellas. It also includes a billfold wallet with a poster, sticker, and an Ol’ Dirty Bastard food stamp card!!!
Do you remember when you first heard hip-hop and knew you loved it? For ‘9 out of 10 cats’ that had something to do with the pure dirty, balls-out attitude that was coming through the speakers. That beat made your neck almost instantly snap back and forth and you made that scrunch face we all do. It just gelled with you. Well Rotter’s one of those. It’s not trend chasing. It’s not refined. It’s rotten.
Made in 2008, it’s the lead track to be taken from the forthcoming ‘Hidden Thoughts’ compilation that will contain previously unreleased tracks along with one or two that may have slipped under people’s radar. At the helm was the uncovered production gem The 83 King and featuring Hekla Kosh, Mudmowth and Ralph Rip Shit you already know everyone brings it. Style kings.
At last, Hypomanic Productions is able to present the first in a series of fresh beats released for free to anyone with creative flair as well as an ear for great music.
Exploding with soul, this first offering from producer Miss Tofelees showcases just how Hypomanic explores the music of the past whilst adding a contemporary twist. Releasing music of this quality for free, it’s easy to see why the collective has already begun to receive admiration from its peers.
“Crisp hip-hop beats – and at my favourite price. Always good to see people doing it for the music, not for the dough.”
– Roots Manuva (MC)
“The beats have that classic Hip Hop essence, just so soulful”
– Just Muz, MC & Spoken Word Artist (Radio One)
“I like the concept, but MORE SO the ethos! THIS IS WHY I DO MUSIC!”
– Paradise the Prolific (MC and founder of MOBO-nominated 57th Dynasty collective)
Budding filmmakers can also get involved as Hypomanic is excited to be launching a video-making competition, which is to be judged by an awesome panel of judges, including:
DJ Philly – Has spun discs at shows for Non Phixion (Uncle Howie Records) The Perceptionists (DEF JUX RECORDS), DJ Cash Money – World DMC champion (DJ CASH MONEY) and also television and radio’s most famous philanderer, Russell Brand!
Paradise the Prolific – Award winning community activist, veteran hiphop artist and founder of MOBO-nominated 57th Dynasty, who has also collaborated with none other than Skinnyman and KRS-One.
Please go to Events for more details.
We are always on the lookout for exciting artists and if you are picked you can be sure you get your video seen by all the right people when we announce the winner in the New Year.
You can also advertise anything from your own work to a business in the Hypomanic forum under Community. Registering to the website is completely free, and we promise we won’t spam you with useless information!
Already involved with Hypomanic Productions is Spida Lee, who ever since his 2005 single ‘Verbal Assassin’ grabbed the attention of the underground, went on to release his own debut album The Foundation and has since been played on Channel U and MTV Base as well as BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra. He has also opened for Skinnyman up and down the country and supported artists including Cappo, Lewis Parker and John Robinson.
His newest release, the ‘Make Money EP Part 2’ is available at the Miss Tofelees bandcamp website.
If you have the talent but need an audience, Hypomanic Productions could be the way you get the recognition you deserve. We hope you join the movement and sign up so you can be a part of what we aim to achieve over the next 12 months!

From will.i.am to Lil B, Royce Da 5’9 to King Mez, Phonte is nothing less than a chameleon when it comes to the work (and collaborators) he has amassed over the past few years.
