The second single from Vursatyl’s ‘Crooked Straights’: http://geni.us/VursatylCrooked
If you’ve caught Blackalicious on tour over the last fifteen years or so, you will have witnessed first hand the prodigious talent of Portland based rapper and singer Vursatyl.
Now 24 years into his rap career, Crooked Straights marks a new chapter in Vurstatyl’s story; unbelievably this is the first time he’s taken centre stage to release a solo record. Full of warm, soulful, Dilla-esque hip hop beats created largely by local Portland producers, Vursatyl provides a master-class in the art of lyricism with a record which surely cements his reputation as one of the most respected artists in the hip hop community. Conscious lyrics delivered with a sense of fun and a touch of swagger makes this a ‘must check’ record for fans of golden era Hip Hop.
‘Crooked Straights is my conflict. This Gold Chain wearin’, clothes hound, fly guy is “Crooked”. He’s also something of a taboo in “conscious Hip Hop”. But I also strive to keep things positive, both in mind and word… That’s the “Straights”.’
Mad Sam & TekMill – ‘Blood Sport’, Produced by Dj Albafun Beats.

Brixton has seen a lot of change in recent years. Unfortunately not all of this change has been positive. Social housing is being demolished and huge amounts of local families are being evicted to make way for unaffordable private developments, the libraries and public services are under attack and locals have had news that traders at the world famous Brixton Railway Arches are all to be evicted by Network Rail for “refurbishments”.
The above are examples of some of the changes that are often referred to as “progress” by those with power, but is this really the type of “progress” our community wants? Further, is this the type of progress that LONDON wants?
This video is the first arts piece taken from a new Multi-Arts community campaign, entitled #OurBrixton. #OurBrixton aims to:
✓Discuss and respond artistically to Brixton’s changing identity.
✓Inspire and support community action that challenges Brixton’s changing identity.
✓Celebrate Brixton’s true/ original identity.
The campaign will consist of various arts pieces that will be created by both professional artists and young people from the community. #OurBrixton will be delivering FREE arts workshops in the community for young people to explore/ learn about important social issues and outcomes will come in form of:
Poetry/Spoken Word, Music, Street Theatre, Sculpture, Street Art, An interactive YouTube campaign + Much more!
This campaign stands in solidarity with the Reclaim: Brixton movement, that continues to be both a crucial driving force behind Brixton’s community resistance and an inspirational example of Brixton’s positive community spirit.
