“Straight up from the steaming streets of the Big Apple, a young, ambitious rapper called Crosby just released his digital album “New York Posterboy” online, available through the website http://www.NewYorkPosterboy.com. The budding artist, also known alternatively as Crosmopolitan and Clockwork Cros, was born in Bellevue to a noted multidisciplinary artist couple from the East Village. From an early age, Crosby became a public figure; he appeared in promo breaks for MTV, fashion photographs by Steven Klein and Tom Munroe and spreads in L’Uomo Vogue, Soma and Pop; posters for the Winter X-Games; music videos by Spike Jonez, Jim Spring, Micheal Gondry and R. Kern and an album cover for Cop Shoot Cop’s “Ask Questions Later”. He interned at Def Jam, worked at Jeffrey Dietch Projects and for 5 years Crosby produced the multi-artist showcase Hip Hop Howl for the Howl! Festival in the East Village, while also bringing that troupe to the SXSW Festival 3 years running. Currently, Crosby directs music videos for his company Photo-POW and is also the visual artist behind all the cover art and web design for Swizz Beatz’ weekly series Monster Mondays.
Crosby has built a vast reservoir of musical material in collaboration with a host of emerging local talent and is now poised to take Gotham by storm with a series of solo album releases, one per month for the next several months, of which “New York Posterboy” is the first. The record is unified by a series of sketches placed within none other than the newsroom of Murdoch’s flagship and New York’s most popular newpaper, the Post, as a cub reporter that reminds me of my younger self convinces his editor to allow him to break the story of Crosby’s splash into the NYC music biz. Using industry beats and a wide range of sampled sounds, Crosby’s aural montages express postmodern sensory overload and the funky syncopation of the life of a native New Yorker. Songs such as “The Wait is Ova”, “Born in the City” and “Museum Music” show a hip intensity and cultural savvy in his poetry and delivery. Though this is a Hip Hop mixtape, it reminds this pundit of the highly entertaining, hyperkinetic sound of one of his favorite rock records from back in the day: The Mothers of Invention’s “Freak Out.” His future releases promise to be even more eclectic and innovative.”
Brrrrrrrrrrr!
Taken from Savvy’s forthcoming Mixtape Play to Win vol.3 (Adapt or Die) on Saving Grace Music.
Most underground and UK heads know that when the name ‘Ruthless’ is mentioned then it’s going to be good release. Well I’m sorry to disappoint but this is a horrible EP……..Don’t be silly b, of course it’s not. But this time Ruthless doesn’t just throw out another solid hit, this is a bar raiser for everybody, so for those little ankle biters out there take note.
For me, one of the most recognisable characteristics about Ruthless is his laid-back vocals. Instead of being shouted at by some no name talent about bullshit that you don’t care about or isn’t real, Ruthless’ simple but passionate vocal flow schools you in a way that you really can’t argue with. The EP’s opener, ‘Nothing Can Stop The Red Skull’, ‘East and West’ and ‘Denial’ are perfect examples of this, and three of the record’s strongest. The content itself is never rose tinted or exaggerated; in fact the almost matter of fact way Ruthless spits some of his heavier stuff is almost lost in the flow and you’re left wondering if he really just said that. Not to say that this is some kind of bumout album, because it’s really not. It’s simply an example of why and where hip-hop was created in the first place, and as the mainstream creates more pop-dance ‘rappers’ it pays to remember why we’ll always stay underground.
Production-wise, this is some of my favourite album production I’ve heard in a long while. I’d only ever heard talk of Redskull and never actually listened to what he had to show so I was pretty hyped to finally actually hear it. The beats are varied and go in and out of the almost old-skool style of raw snares, to completely surprising synths and cuts. It’s well mixed and precise. I’d love to hear him doing a remix of this record with some serious cuts and scratches.
All in all kids, if you know Ruthless then you already know he’s good so you won’t need much convincing in copping this. For those of you just discovering him I suggest you hop on his band wagon before it leaves town.

The two words that are immediately synonymous with “The Next Level” are ‘aggressive’ and ‘variation’. Every track on this release is completely different from the last, and considering this weighs in at 18 songs (minus the odd intermission or two) that’s no small feat. If you’re going to use a song with the name ‘Cock As Fuck’ as your opener then you walk the very narrow tightrope between flopping like a cheap Asda pastry and actually coming good on your claims. Well surprisingly enough, J. Karma actually delivers. Whilst it certainly has elements and songs that are full of the stuff, it’s not your typical braggadocio angry hip-hop album. Even though I’m quite partial to that sort of release as well, it always pays to have some variety.
The dichotomy between the content is ridiculous. J.Karma seamlessly goes from a completely unapologetic and realistic look at life on the road and white powder distribution with ‘Over Here Feat. Tommy Bones & Little Dee’ (two MCs who both shine in equal measure on this track) to ‘Big Money’, a song all about the pitfalls of the drugs game. The irony really isn’t lost on the on the MC, and you really can’t hate on the dude’s self-aware narrative throughout the album.
Now don’t get it fucked up and think J.Karma is one of those rappers that relies only on shock and violent content just to get recognised (I’m not talking about some bullshit Odd Future ting son). This is simply an album that sometimes deals with the darker side of things. It’s not a solely introspective, ark, realistic or bragging release. It’s all of it, and even though it came out last summer it’s already found itself in my top 5 2012 albums thus far.
Get yourself some decent music. Another banger from your manz Tricksta.
