New music and accompanying visual from Brother Ali as he drops the introspective joint ‘Sensitive’.
Talking about the track Brother Ali says “‘Sensitive’ deals with the reality that artists are often times faced with self doubt and a deep sense that the world isn’t hearing us as we’d like to be heard. This one was made at a time when I’d taken too long to release new music, had medical trouble with my voice and felt like I’d alienated fans with my political statements. Typical ‘tortured artist’ vibe that not many people talk about in Hip-Hop, but we all experience it on one level or another.”
Over the past 17 years, Brother Ali has earned wide critical acclaim for his deeply personal, socially conscious and inspiring brand of Hip-Hop. Under Rhymesayers Entertainment, he’s unleashed a series of lauded projects, establishing himself as one of the most respected independent voices in music.
His latest album, ‘All the Beauty in This Whole Life’, represented the newest and most refined chapter of his life’s journey. “Each of my albums are the result of the pain, growth and eventual healing that I experience,” Ali said. “Articulating the pain and navigating the healing allows the people who really feel my music to travel with me. It’s not only that we hurt together, we heal together as well.”
This year, Brother Ali’s critically acclaimed debut album on Rhymesayers Entertainment, ‘Shadows on the Sun’, celebrates its 15th anniversary. To commemorate this occasion, Brother Ali will embark on a special 13-date headlining tour where he will perform the monumental album in its entirety each night.
‘The Shadows on the Sun’ 15-Year Anniversary Tour kicks off November 1st in Washington D.C., with stops in New York, Minneapolis, Austin, Los Angeles, and more. http://bit.ly/ShadowsTour15
He may no longer be with us but we still keep getting blessed with unheard verses from the late great Sean Price, as we do again here with this two track release alongside Mic Handz out today.
Back In 2012, Brooklyn emcees Mic Handz and Sean Price discussed creating an epic project titled “The EP: The Epic Phail.” One Day out of the blue, Sean called Mic and said “Come get me, I feel Rappy.” Once at the Carnegie Deli Studio in NYC, Mic played Sean the instrumental for what would become their initial collaboration, “Stay Givin It up”. After Sean laid his verse, he told Mic “Dont rap…you can lay yours later, play another beat” and he proceeded to lay his bars for “Conceit” & “Alive”.
Some time had past since Sean and Mic had recorded and the fate of Epic Phail was still unknown. Mic finally received a text from Sean ” Im not ignoring you, I just have a few things going on…just send the beats”. That last communication took place August 6th 2015. Sean went on to pass away on August 8th.
Def Squad acknowledges the absolute fact that Sean Price is one of the greatest MCs to ever touch a microphone. He truly blessed the Hip Hop culture with his talent and his character. It is Def Squad honor to release unreleased footage of Sean Price with the blessing of his wife Bernadette and featuring a multi faceted and extremely talented Mic Handz.
Brudez swung by the Better World Studios and gave them and us a live rendition of his track ‘I Don’t Wanna Hate You But….’ featuring a powerful vocal feature from Shanade and band action from Andy Waring (keys), Tom Graham (drums) and Justin Bygrave (bass). Really feeling this one check it out…
‘Refuse2Kill’ by Lowkey was commissioned by Roundhouse with the brief for him to create a song and film about the anti-war movement in Britain during WW1. Check out the thought provoking track and visual as Lowkey tells us about those who stuck to their principles and morals and reject conformity by refusing to kill.
