Awon & Phoniks return with the first single “Summer Madness” off their upcoming LP ‘Knowledge Of Self’ set to release early autumn 2015. The song focuses on black on black violence in urban communities as well as racially geared violence and mistreatment of youth by law enforcement. Awon speaks lyrically on incidents from his past and appeals to his community to hold themselves accountable for their actions, at the same time cautioning his listeners to the danger of violence at the hands of police. Phoniks sets the backdrop to his testimony with a combination of jazzy rhodes piano and boom-bap drums, while smooth saxophone samples weave themselves in and out of the composition.

Over the last few years, the rap scene in Atlanta has churned out numerous artists who have reached high levels of acclaim, both on national and regional fronts. But more recently, there’s been statements from individuals such as A$AP Rocky who believe the hottest city in rap is actually one dimensional. Yes.. Gucci Mane is the universal trap god, yes.. Future is fuckin up commas (and keeping the autotune alive) and yes.. Makonnen gave DJs everywhere a for-sure banger to add to their Tuesday night playlists but where do you turn for music with substance within Atlanta’s market?
The Sweat Shop, curated and powered by Audible Hustle, brought together both talented emcees from throughout the region and hip hop fans who appreciate the flavor of golden age raps. During times where the “turn-up” seems to be all we know, a few emcees have consciously taken a slightly more distinguished route. Featuring Synik & Rod McCoy, Michael Aristotle, No Suh Foster, Blunder, Fleetwood Fred, Div. W + more! Follow @Audible_Hustle for updates and new product from the AHE crew.
