Although released a little while back (October ’13) Vinny Knuckles hit Stix up here at HHLAT, requesting a review and we thought it only right to give it a write up! Tha Night Hawks are an MC/Producer duo hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina, consisting of Charles Herron and Vinny Knuckles.
The project is entirely produced by the duo, and production has a definite 90’s feel to it, with some very nice samples and loops used throughout the project. Both members also step up to the mic throughout the project and the rhymes, delivery and flows are on point.
Throughout the album, the duo more than hold their own when rhyming with guests including Mista Spot (who drops a nice verse on personal favourite ‘Up Top)’, Sonny Cheeba (of Camp Lo) and Jillz amongst others.
There are some clever songs on here too, ‘Clip in The Glock’ is a rather un PC love song to the duos trusty firearms over a smoothed out 70’s style beat, and ‘Would Be a fool’ is reminiscent of some of Ghostface’s odes to the ladies. ‘Party Y’all’ has a very Wu-Tang -esque feel to it, and has a banging, horn lead beat, and ‘This Goes Out To You’, with its necksnapping drums and infectious guitar, is another standout track. As far as guest verses go, Jillz (who features on ‘Barz Son’) has my personal favourite on the album.
Overall, this is a solid project, with some really nice production. Although occasionally let down by some filler lyrics that don’t always fit the beat, the majority of the rhyming is tight, and there are some catchy hooks too. Dusty Crates and Empty Clips is one for fans of sample heavy, raw but soulful production and equally raw, but clever, rhymes, and is a successful homage to the 90s golden era.
