‘The Sewermouth Sessions’ is the latest release from long-time stalwart of the UK hip hop scene, Baron Samedi. Released on the 21st of November 2013 on a pay-what-you-like basis via Baron Samedi’s Bandcamp, The Sewermouth Sessions contains 11 tracks of banging and innovative hip hop, including production from Sofa King, Twisted Roots, and Baron Samedi himself, as well as cuts from Dise Beats and additional vocals from Simien Fox.
Baron Samedi has been active on the UK hip hop scene since 2001, releasing a number of self-financed and self-produced L.P.s and E.P.s, both as a solo artist and as one half of Undercurrent. He has previously received airplay on both Radio 1 and 1xtra, and has supported artists as diverse as Terrafirma, Heavy Metal Kings, Phi Life Cipher, and Flo-rida, to name but some. With a whole host of dope releases hitting the inbox this week and review requests coming out of my ears, Chris stepped up to help us out here at HHL&T and here’s what he had to say about Baron Samedi’s ‘The Sewermouth Sessions’….
After last years ‘Ghost Network Vol 3’ introduced me to Baron Samedi, I had been waiting for his next release, and ‘The Sewer Mouth Sessions’ does not dissapoint! Described by the man himself as ‘A collection of happy sad love hate music for animals’, the album covers many different topics, from the ‘Park Bench Swag’ of opening track ‘Louder’, which features some cleverly self deprecating, as well as boastful lyrics and some nice Dise Beats cuts, to the poignant and rather sad tales of a love affair ending, ‘I Shoulda’ and ‘Closure’. Production comes courtesy of Sofa King, Baron himself, and Twisted Roots, and between them they supply a diverse selection of beats, from the rowdy ‘Louder’, the funky ‘Genesis 1:29’ to the melancholy ‘ Closure’, meaning the listener is kept attentive and entertained throughout the album.
Baron himself shows just as much diversity on the mic, with witty wordplay, amusing, sometimes even sarcastic satire, and a sense of honesty rarely seen in a scene often full of front and bragging.
Standout tracks for me include the afore mentioned ‘Louder’, a big, brash opener produced by Baron that will have your neck snapping before you know it, where Baron dismisses the bling bling ethos (‘Fuck a gold chain’) and shows that he can bar with the best of them, as well as the clever ‘You’, a love song to sleep and dreams, over a lovely Twisted Roots production and a smooth Simien Fox chorus.
Really and truly though, each and every track on the album stands on its own, and those who have different tastes will have different standouts. All in all this is an honest, witty, clever, entertaining and at times poignant album, and I feel that most people will find at least one track that they can relate to on a personal level.
This is a ‘ Name your price’ bandcamp release, which means you can download for free, however if you have the spare pennies I very much suggest contributing a little something to Baron Samedi for a well rounded and well written album.
If your a fan of honest, witty lyrics and varied production I highly recommend this release.

Dr. G is a talented producer from Manchester who is possibly one of the UK’s most unsung heroes making beats for English, American & Eastern European hip-hop artists from underground, old school, new school, independent artists and some major artists respectively. Starting out as a DJ back in 1993, he became involved in the organising of events with the Sony Music Street Team and became an official Def Jam Records Street Team Rep promoting numerous events at the Manchester M.E.N with Lauran Hill, Destiny’s Child and Dead Prez. This position allowed him to enter a large celebrity circle meeting some of the industry greats in the form of Eminem, Destiny’s Child, TQ, Common Sense, Xzibit, Wu Tang, Saigon and Mohamed Ali.
Spending countless days in the studio he soon realised that is was the creation of music he enjoyed most, and spent most of his time working on mixtapes for local acts & artists such as Shotty Horror, Rokket, Meany, Omen RA, Hoodman (Tyler Daley) and HiJack Hood. In 2007 Dr. G released ‘Above The Systematic Matrix’ under Revolutionary Records featuring many of UK and US artists, which was then followed in 2008 by his debut solo and self-produced album ‘Last Dayz’ featuring Shyheim, finally giving him a starting point. As his sound grew he produced tracks for New York underground legends St. Laz and Opium, which led to him getting recognition from DJ Kay Slay on New York’s Hot 97 many times, as well as other mixtape deejays, radio stations and leading worldwide blogs.
Dr. G soon started gaining notoriety with other stateside artists such as Shabazz The Disciple, Agallah Don Bishop, Chuck Burns, Rap P and more recently being involved with Hell Razah and his Ghetto Government Movement project, producing most of his album which will be due out early 2014. Additionally he has also been working with Inspectah Deck and Fes Taylor, as well as Southern artist Champ Rushmore, Poe Mack, and Crafsmen from V.A. and Diem, Ghost Dog (1100 Hunters), Chox (Chose) Mac and Joose Jones III from N.C. respectively.
Now as we gear up for Dr. G Presents ‘The Coalition’ due out mid February 2014, a compilation album which features St. Laz, Virgil Kent, Scottie Flippen, Chox (chose) Mac, Poe Mack, Crafsmen, Ghost Dog, Rap P, Stockmashin’, Born Ready, Big Sono, Twisted Insane, Fatal Hussein, Young Noble, Yukmouth, Outlaws, Hell Razah, Inspectah Deck and more, we get this exclusive visual so you can get to know the name.
