If you’re a long term follower of HHLAT, then I’m sure you’re already aware of how little time we give to performers that write songs that constantly glamourise violence/drugs/bling. As we’ve always said, if it’s in context then you can pretty much rap about anything in the world, as long as your intentions are clear and honest (and you’re not being a dick, that’s a key point). That being said, Dividends by Memphis local, Marco Pave is a very good example of how to analysis and address gangs and violence, and not sugar coat it. It’s not a song by a dude that saw a few videos on Youtube and thought “Yeah, yeah I’ll buy a snapback and tell everyone I was born in Compton”. No, this is realistic and dark hip-hop at its best. Everyone’s broke.
