The title’s pretty much given it away but if you’re a sucker for some cuts and scratches then this is for you, and a big ol’ love for the man Curtis Mayfield would be quite useful too. SmCity and DJ Dub Floyd have been releasing bi-weekly tribute albums (although if I’m honest this is the first I’ve heard of it, sorry internet world), mixing in SmCity’s verses, DJ Dub Floyd’s turntable and production skills, all with some gold Curtis Mayfield instrumentals and vocals.
This could have been done really badly, but the boys have mixed and sampled this well, not simply rapping over Mayfield’s vocals, or throwing in a few snares over the instrumental breaks. It’s a solid soul-hip-hop album, and a good example of how to do a tribute well.
