A nice little remix thrown our way courtesy of Configa. I was going to write up a little paragraph of love but the man himself says it much better.
“HaStyle (The Barber-Artist) was a multi-talented entrepreneur at a young age. During the late 1980’s, Hastyle spent his summers at his Grandmother’s house in Long Island City, NY (Queensbridge) and became a junior counselor at RIIS Day Camp. During his stay, his Uncle played the newest rap music on the local radio shows. This introduced him to the music from pioneers like Eric B and Rakim, Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, and De La Soul. He was inspired by the various styles of flow from these, as well as many more rappers and groups. As a result, he decided to rearrange his poetry writings into rhythmic patterns which matched the songs he liked. Thus, forming the style he calls, ‘HaStyle‘.
In the early 90’s, shortly after graduating high school, HaStyle earned his Master’s License in Barbering, after attending New York Technical College to study Art and Advertising, and began rapping in show-cases across New York City. As a soloist, he began recording demo songs at local studios and designing his own logos to advertise on t-shirts. He then teamed up with the Queens NYC underground rap group ‘DMO’ (Dead Men’s Organization), which consisted of Apani B Fly Emcee, Mike One, and L.I.F.E.LONG, which enabled HaStyle to expand and openly express his cartooning and rhyming talents. DMO performed at various shows across New York as opening acts for Talib Kweli and The Fugees. The DMO also aired a radio show, in 1995, called ‘The Graveyard Shift‘ on 105.1 FM (WNWK). Shortly afterwards, HaStyle joined the military with the desire to travel and learn more about the world.
In 1999 he travelled to Kunsan Air Force Base (Korea) to continue his military duties. In the dormitory he proceeded to build upon his creativity. With his New York style haircuts, he drew a lot of attention. He made his side money cutting his co-workers hair while advertising his newest songs. He also painted several murals in various airplane hangars located on the flight line. After his overseas tour, he returned to the US and was assigned to Andrew Air Force base in Silver Springs, Maryland, where he painted a few more murals located at the fitness gym and in the base warehouse. In 2001, after his honorable discharge from the US Air Force, HaStyle continued to pursue his dreams. While still cutting hair, he was determined to work on his own music, He attended numerous ‘Open Mic’ rap and poetry clubs throughout New York City. He linked up with former group member, L.I.F.E.LONG, to learn more about how the underground rap scene had changed and what to do to succeed. In 2009, he was introduced to The Waxaholiks (affiliates of Grey Square Records), a collaboration of beat makers from France. This opportunity allowed HaStyle to,once again expand his work abroad.
As a result, the album ‘Hair Cuts (The LP)’, was born. Scheduled for release on the 27th of March, 2012, the ‘Hair Cuts’ LP is well anticipated and highly recommended. It combines the talents of clever lyrical skill in conjunction with dynamic beats. ‘Hair Cuts’ tells the story of a struggling barber living in Da’Ville, Queens NYC through the storytelling genius of rhyming. Featured on this LP are the likes of Shabaam Sadeeq, LaSonya Gunter, Rashan, and the legendary Earl Blaize (1/4th of the blazing group Anti-Pop Consortium). An artist at heart, HaStyle pursues the art of rapping in order to promote his cartooning, barbering, and many other endeavors. Hastyle (The Barber-Artist) has been an underground sensation for over two decades. He wishes to make the world a better place through his music as well as encouraging individuals to be their own entrepreneur. He combines the art of barbering and rhyme writing in order to embody a unique sound, setting him apart from the rest.”
