Industry experts and music critics have once labeled Kulez a gem, a diamond in the ruff – what use is a gem if it is easy to find. With this in mind summer 2011 saw the release of a rare hard to get hold of EP under his alias Kuda Brown.
It was a EP with a sense of anger, you can feel the aggression especially in tracks like Fight For the Mic. Some called it a LP but still Kulez argued his case saying it was to short for a full length album. Others said it was offensive with tracks like Master Plan being sexist, chauvinist and advocating drug use.In a genre of music with a history of gang star rap where it is cool to be a dealer, Kulez makes something for the users, something for the people that have seen it from the other end of the table.
We saw Kulez break from the comical rapper we know from the mixtapes and the underground hit “Smell the Tea” to create a side character and stick to one concept for the whole EP Kuda Brown sounds like he needs a shrink, his laboratory was a lavatory and boasts about being broke with tracks like “I need Money”.
The release was a self portrait of the underground rhymer dependant on intoxicants and not afraid to be honest. He was an artist surrounded by a lot of success from the battle scene and a lot of other acts going mainstream from the battle scene. Kulez remained underground promoting himself, self marketing and did regional tours performing hardcore hip hop in local area clubs. This generated a healthy underground buzz.
Late 2011 sees Kulez start KulENT a registered brand focusing on music, lifestyle, entertainment & professionalism. N2KR a record label and music production company as well as publishing in preparation for a single release titled “Say Hi to My Mrs”. You can clearly define the transition from his alias and at a glance you would think it is a love track…
