Hey, so how are you? Is that new eye make-up? A new haircut? Gosh, you look so lovely.
When I first heard the bars of the opening the intro track that quickly leads into “EA Shit” I immediately thought of Army Of The Pharaohs in how J-Roots has produced the EP and Professor Breakz has handled the job cutting and turntables; I got a sense of less is more. Not to say that it’s lacking quite the opposite in fact, because they don’t waste their time on flashy overproduction and attempting to add in instrumentation and drum fills that just aren’t needed they gain by beefing up the cuts and production. Being a big fan of DJing I really enjoyed the amount of scratching and cuts featured throughout the EP.
Vocals-wise I was a big fan of Reds’ vocal tone and flow, he was very reminiscent of D Double E in the way he articulates bars and words. I don’t think this was his intention, I think he simply raps like this but either it was a refreshing sound and played off J-Roots production well. His slight platroi influence is showcased wel especially on “Beg No Friend” which in turn is by far one of the EP’s best track. Reds’ lyrical subjects are varied and don’t tend to stay in one place, there’s always an obvious narrative through each song but no track is overloaded with tired cliches and obvious metaphors. “Report From The Real” is a good example with a cutting line: “Try riot, but that shit don’t really make a change. Couple new laws and some freedom that they take away”.
“Cool & Deadly” is 7 tracks long but it seems to fly by pretty fast, which can only serve in its favour. Keep you wanting more and all that.
If this is the type of stuff they’re coming with in Norwich I want to hear more. Check out the links below to get the EP as well as hear Pro Breakz remix of it, which if you’re a scratch-head like me then you won’t be disappointed. In fact I loved it as much as the original, both need to be picked up in their own right!
